Tayammum and Wiping Over Socks

Dry Ablution (Tayammum) and Wiping Over Socks: A Complete Guide

In situations where water is unavailable or its use is harmful, Islam provides the alternative of Tayammum (dry ablution)

What is Tayammum?

Tayammum is the Islamic act of dry purification using clean earth, sand, or dust when water is inaccessible or harmful. It serves as a substitute for Wudhu (ablution) or Ghusl (ritual bath) under specific circumstances.

When is Tayammum Permitted?

  1. No Water Available – If water is not found within approximately 1.7 km (1 mile).
  2. Danger Near Water – Fear of enemies, wild animals, or snakes near the water source.
  3. Risk of Thirst – If water is scarce and using it for Wudhu may cause thirst.
  4. No Means to Fetch Water – Lack of a rope, bucket, or helper to draw water.
  5. Health Concerns – If a doctor confirms water use will harm health.
  6. Financial Constraint – Unable to afford water sold at unreasonable prices.
  7. Uncertain Water Availability – If no trace of water is found within a mile.

When is Tayammum Not Permitted?

  • If enough water is available to perform the four Faraa’idh (obligatory acts) of Wudhu.
  • If the earth or sand is impure (Najis)—even if dry, it cannot be used for Tayammum (though dry impure ground can be prayed on).

How to Perform Tayammum (Step-by-Step)

1. Make Niyyah (Intention)

Recite:
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
"Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem"

For Wudhu, intend:
"نَوَيْتُ التَّيَمُّمَ لِاسْتِبَاحَةِ الصَّلَاةِ"
"Nawaytu-t-tayammuma li-istibaahat-is-Salaah"
(I intend Tayammum to permit prayer.)

For Ghusl, intend:
"نَوَيْتُ التَّيَمُّمَ لِرَفْعِ الْحَدَثِ الْأَكْبَرِ"
"Nawaytu-t-tayammuma li-raf'il-hadath-il-akbar"
(I intend Tayammum to remove major impurity.)

2. Strike Hands on Clean Earth/Sand

  • Lightly strike both palms on pure earth, sand, stone, or unglazed clay.
  • Shake off excess dust.

3. Wipe the Face

  • Rub both hands over the entire face, ensuring no part is left untouched.

4. Strike Hands Again & Wipe Arms

  • Strike hands on earth a second time.
  • Wipe the right arm up to the elbow with the left hand, then the left arm up to the elbow with the right hand.
  • Pass fingers through each other (Khilaal) and adjust rings if worn.
