In Islam, death is a transition to the afterlife, and proper burial rites (Janazah) are a collective obligation (Fardh Kifayah). This guide covers the Islamic procedures from the moment of death until burial, including Ghusl (ritual washing), Kafan (shrouding), Janazah prayer, and burial.
Signs of Approaching Death (Muhtadhar)
When a person shows signs of death:
- Place them on their right side facing the Qiblah (or on their back with feet towards Qiblah).
- Keep the surroundings clean; use Lobaan (frankincense) for fragrance.
- Recite Surah Yasin near them.
Talqeen (Prompting the Shahadah)
- Gently remind the dying person to recite:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
"Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh."
("I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger.")
After Death: Immediate Steps
1. Close the eyes and mouth, tie the jaw with a clean cloth.
2. Straighten the limbs and cover the body with a sheet.
3. Recite:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَىٰ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
"Bismillah wa ‘ala millati rasulillah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam."
("In the name of Allah and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah.")
4. Make dua for the deceased:
اللَّهُمَّ يَسِّرْ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرَهُ، وَسَهِّلْ عَلَيْهِ مَا بَعْدَهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ
"Allahumma yassir ‘alayhi amrahu, wa sahhil ‘alayhi ma ba’dahu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi’ mudkhalahu."
("O Allah, ease his affairs, make the hereafter easy for him, honor his arrival, and widen his grave.")
5. Family members should recite:
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
"Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un."
("To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.")
Ghusl (Ritual Washing of the Deceased)
Requirements:
- Clean water, cotton, camphor, soap, and a clean sheet.
- Who performs Ghusl?
Men: Father, son, or brother.
Women: Mother, daughter, or sister.
Steps:
- Place the body on an elevated surface.
- Cover the Satr (private parts) and perform Istinja (cleansing).
- Give Wudhu (without gargling or inhaling water).
- Wash the body 3 times, starting from the right side.
- Apply camphor water in the final wash.
Kafan (Shrouding the Deceased)
For Men:
- 3 white sheets (7x7 feet each).
- Apply camphor paste on the forehead, nose, hands, knees, and feet.
For Women:
- 5 pieces: Two sheets, a long shirt (Qamees), a head veil (Khimaar), and a chest wrapper (Sinaband).
Janazah Prayer (Salat al-Janazah)
How to Perform:
1. Stand in rows facing the Qiblah.2. Four Takbeers (Allahu Akbar) with specific duas:
- After 1st Takbeer: Recite Surah Fatiha & Thana.
- After 2nd Takbeer: Durood Ibrahim.
- After 3rd Takbeer: Dua for the deceased (see below).
- After 4th Takbeer: Salaam (right then left).
Dua for the Deceased:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ
"Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa ‘afihi wa’fu ‘anhu."
("O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, and grant him safety.")
Burial (Dafan)
1. Lower the body into the grave on the right side, facing Qiblah.
2. Untie the Kafan straps.
3. Fill the grave while reciting:
مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَىٰ
"Minha khalaqnakum wa feeha nu’eedukum wa minha nukhrijukum taratan ukhra."
("From the earth We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will bring you out once more.")
4.. Shape the grave like a camel’s hump (not flat or square).
Visiting the Grave (Qabrastan)
- Recite Surah Yasin, Surah Ikhlas .
- Make dua for the deceased:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ
"Assalamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyari minal-mu’mineena wal-muslimeen."
("Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves, believers and Muslims.")

1. Can women attend Janazah prayer?
- Women can pray Janazah but should not follow the funeral procession or visit graves frequently.
2. What if no same-gender person is available for Ghusl?
- Perform Tayammum (dry ablution) instead.
